How to Read a Game Score: The One Number That Tells You Everything

Basketball produces an enormous amount of data. Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, field goal percentage, true shooting percentage, player efficiency rating, usage rate — the list goes on. For a General Manager or Sporting Director trying to evaluate a player quickly, the volume of information can be as much of a problem as the absence of it.

Game Score cuts through that noise.

What Game Score is

Game Score was developed by basketball statistician John Hollinger as a single-number summary of a player’s per-game contribution. It combines a player’s positive contributions, points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, with their negative contributions, turnovers, missed shots, personal fouls, into one number that reflects overall impact.

The formula is:

Game Score = PTS + (0.4 × FGM) − (0.7 × FGA) − (0.4 × missed FT) + (0.7 × ORB) + (0.3 × DRB) + STL + (0.7 × AST) + (0.7 × BLK) − (0.4 × PF) − TOV

How to interpret the number

As a rough guide:

  • Below 5 — below average performance
  • 5–10 — solid role player
  • 10–15 — quality starter
  • 15–20 — strong starter, potential impact player
  • Above 20 — elite performance

These thresholds apply broadly across professional basketball but should be adjusted for league strength. A Game Score of 18 in EuroLeague means something different from an 18 in a lower-tier domestic league. Context matters.

Why Game Score is useful for recruitment

Three reasons.

First, it is fast. You can sort an entire league by Game Score in seconds and immediately identify the top performers. It’s a first filter, not a final verdict.

Second, it rewards efficiency. Unlike raw point totals, Game Score penalises a player for taking bad shots and missing free throws. A player averaging 20 points on terrible efficiency will have a lower Game Score than a player averaging 15 points on elite efficiency. This makes it a better proxy for actual contribution than points per game alone.

Third, it is cross-league comparable. Because Game Score uses the same formula regardless of league, you can use it to compare a player in the Czech NBL with a player in the Spanish ACB, with appropriate context about league strength differences.

What Game Score doesn’t tell you

Game Score is not a complete picture. It doesn’t capture defensive impact beyond steals and blocks. It doesn’t account for minutes played, pace of play, or the quality of teammates. It won’t tell you whether a player’s production was built against weak competition or in a system that inflated their numbers.

Use it as an entry point, not a conclusion. A high Game Score gets a player onto your shortlist. Everything else, shot charts, role analysis, film, context, determines whether they stay there.

The number in practice

When MelonIQ users sort by Game Score across our full database, a clear picture emerges: the players at the top are almost always the ones scouts already know about. What’s more interesting are the players ranked 20th to 50th in leagues that don’t get much attention — the Czech NBL, the Finnish Korisliiga, the Canadian CEBL. These are the players with legitimate Game Scores playing in leagues below the radar.

That’s where the value is.
